BTHSAA together with YSEALI Philippines through the US Embassy Manila held Public Webinar on “Breastmilk is Best for Babies” last March 13, 2021
The BTHSAA, founded by Aries Asilo, conducted a webinar on “Breastmilk is Best for Babies” in celebration of International Women’s History Month and in support of women and infant’s health and nutrition. The webinar is organized through the Younified Awards 2020 for Civic Engagement given by YSEALI Philippines and the US Embassy Manila, and in partnership with the Nutritionist Dietitian Association of the Philippines- Batangas, Human Milk Bank Association of the Philippines, Human Ecology Institute of the Philippines, Beavrr Inc, and the Municipal Government of Bauan. The webinar highlighted breastfeeding, human milk banking and optimal infant and young child feeding in emergencies.
The program kicked off with two radio guesting in Batangas. The Philippine Information Agency (PIA- Batangas) interviewed Aries Asilo about the efforts of BTHSAA during the Taal Volcano Eruption 2020 Relief Drive that started the Women, Infant, Child Care Spaces (WICCS). Through WICCS, Breastmilk Drive was initiated for 65 infants and their mothers evacuated in BTHS School. Radyo Totoo Batangas also interviewed Aries Asilo and Ms. Alyssa Catapang of NDAP Batangas about the importance of breastfeeding and what nourishment should the mothers do for themselves and their children.
Prior to the March 13 webinar, three teasers of the webinar were posted in social media and were shared multiple times by various private and government agencies including the National Nutrition Council Davao Region, Latch Philippines, and the Ozamis City Nutrition Committee. The public webinar was tuned in by various groups such as the NDAP National and South Luzon, Breastfeeding Bicolanas, LATCH Los Banos, Modern Nanays of Mindanao, City Health Office of Batangas, and audiences from CALABARZON, various hospitals, Malabon City, country of Thailand, Bicol Region, and in Mindanao to name a few. Audiences participated in comment section and Q&A part of the webinar wrapping up inquiries on 1) if it is safe to donate breastmilk even during time of the pandemic and 2) why is it not ok to donate infant formula milk in evacuation centers in time of emergencies. Close to 60,000 nationally was the audience of the webinar base on the pages who showed and shared the Live webinar proper. The Municipal Government of Bauan also pledged support by including breastfeeding in times of emergencies in their Disaster Risk Preparedness manual.
Speakers for the webinar were graced by Miss Vicenta E. Borja and Miss Nadine Casiño. Miss Borja is the former National Program Manager of the Infant and Young Child Feeding Program & Mother-baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, of the Department of Health. She is also the Co-founder and Vice President of Human Milk Bank Association of the Philippines, Inc. She highlighted the importance of breastfeeding and human milk banking. Miss Nadine is an award winning Breastfeeding advocate. She established Alima Mother Support Center: Cagayan de Oro’s first Breastfeeding Mother Support Center which is a social enterprise to make skilled breastfeeding support and maternal care accessible and available to the community. This webinar aligns with the 2021 national nutrition month theme’s “Malnutrisyon Patuloy na Labanan, First 1000 Days, tutukan.”
