2 cops mauled, injured

TWO active police officers were injured when they were allegedly mauled and beaten by a group of unidentified male individuals in front of a resto-bar shortly after midnight Sunday in Malabon City.

Malabon police chief P/Col. Jessie Tamayao identified the victims as P/Cpl. Jefferson Apit, assigned at Malabon Police Community Precinct (PCP) 7 and Pat. Janrex Anguluan of PCP-1 while the still unidentified suspects managed to escap.

Homicide investigators P/SSgt. Richard Andrew Calaycay and P/SSgt. Philip Cesar Apostol said the victims were inside the parking area of IAMS Restobar in Bgy. Tanong allegedly to buy food when a group of male individuals ganged-up on Cpl. Apit who was about to board his motorcycle.

Cpl. Apit was able to run towards Barangay Hall of Tañong and sought assistance while Pat. Anguluan tried to chase the suspects after introducing himself as policeman.

However, upon reaching 2nd Street in Bgy. Tañong, the suspects attacked and took turns in beating Pat. Anguluan who nearly lost conciousness then took his service firearm and escaped towards an unknown direction.

The victim was rushed by concerned citizens to Tondo Medical Center where he was placed under observation.

Col. Tamayao said his men were conducting a follow-up operation for possible arrest of the suspects, investigation is still ongoing to determine the motive behind the incidents.
