TWO inmates were killed while 30 others were wounded during a riot that broke out between two warring gangs inside the Manila City Jail on Oroquieta Street in Sta. Cruz, Manila yesterday morning.
MCJ Spokesperson J/Senior Insp. Jayrex Bustinera said nine of those wounded were rushed to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRMMC) while the rest were treated at the jail infirmary.
A report from the Manila Police District (MPD)-Sta. Cruz Police Station 3 identified the two dead inmates as Lito Escala, 39, of 1321 Alinyan St., Moriones, Tondo and Alvin Royo, 37, of 1165 Panganiban St., Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Investigation showed that at 6:28 a.m., members of the Batang City Jail (BCJ) and Sigue-sigue Sputnik Gang engaged in fisticuffs inside Dorms 11 and 12 (Barangay Paraiso).
It was learned that other inmates began taking sides and joined in the fray, which was broken up after about ten minutes. Bustinera said no one used any weapon.
J/Insp. Nelmar Malemata is investigating to determine what triggered the fight.
Jail officials said some of the inmates whose liberty are at stake due to the Good Conduct Time Allowance (CGCTA) review issue have become irritable lately.
Bustinera and Malemata assured that the situation had been contained but that as a matter of protocol, all visits are temporarily suspended pending the outcome of invesigation.
