TWO were killed including a 17-year-old out-of-school youth and another was seriously wounded when a lone gunman opened fire at the group of individuals who were engaged in illegal gambling in a funeral wake Thursday evening in Caloocan City.
Caloocan police chief P/Col. Noel Flores said Crisostomo Santiago, 27, of Malvar St., Bgy. 142 and Jasper Esliza, 17, of 184 Gen. Mascardo St., Bgy. 144 died on the spot from bullet wounds in their heads and bodies while Joshua Arcega, 27, of 64 Gen. Mascardo was rushed to Manila Central University (MCU) hospital for treatment of bullet wound in the body.
Investigation showed that while the victims, together with several individuals, were engaged in illegal gambling in the wake along Balagtas St. near Ezekiel Alley, Bgy. 143, a lone gunman, wearing face mask suddenly appeared at around 11:20 p.m. and fired successive shots, hitting the victims in their heads and bodies.
After the killing, the suspect casually walked away towards Ezekiel Alley as if nothing happened.
Caloocan police homicide investigators believed that Santiago was the actual target of the attack after his father admitted that his son was nearly killed twice for his involvement in illegal gambling.
“Noong una, nasaksak na raw ang biktima pero masuwerteng hindi napuruhan, sumunod nabaril naman siya pero nakaligtas sa mga tama ng bala,” police said.
Col. Flores said investigators are now closely tracking down a person of interest who might be involved in the murder of the victims and seriously injuring another.
