THREE suspected gun traffickers were killed in a shootout with agents of the National Capital Region of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group early yesterday morning in Baseco, Port Area, Manila.
CIDG-NCR chief Supt. Arnold Thomas C. Ibay identified the suspects as Robert Gutierrez, the suspected leader of the ‘Oteb Crime Group’, Aris Tuason Alcantara and Michael R. Santiago.
Ibay said the shootout occurred at Block 1, Gasangan, in Baseco Compound, Port Area, Manila, at around 2 a.m. during a sting conducted by undercover officers of the CIDG Manila DFU, with the assistance of the Manila Police District (MPD) District Intelligence Division and MPD Station 5 under Chief Supt. Vicente D. Danao Jr.
bay said the suspects sensed they were dealing with policemen and tried to escape on board a motorcycle while firing their guns at the poseurs.
The three died in the firefight with the CIDG operatives.
Recovered from the slain suspects’ possession were one caliber .45 pistol; two cal. .38 revolvers; a North America Black Widow cal. .22 revolver; one MK II fragmentation grenade; 15 heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu; assorted identification cards and their getaway vehicle, a motorcycle.
The killing of the three suspects came three days after operatives of the CIDG-NCR Northern District Field Unit shot dead Reggie de Guzman, 31, and Jayson Paguia, 24, in an encounter in Caloocan City. De Guzman and Paguia were suspected members of a gun trafficking syndicate operating in the northern part of Metro Manila.
De Guzman was found to be included in the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council watch list in Bgy. 12 in Caloocan City who is also wanted for a string of criminal cases including the 2009 killing of barangay ‘tanod’ Antonio Braquin as well as robbery-holdup, frustrated homicide and robbery-snatching in Camanava district.
