A combination of heat and congestion was seen as the cause of the death of three inmates at the detention cell of Pasay Police Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) Thursday night in Pasay City.
The victims, identified as Noel Albetia, 36, of 4436 Duhat St., Bgy. 178, Camarin, Caloocan City, Edwin Moreno, 25, of Bgy. 156, Zone 16, Tramo Riverside, and Felix Yusores Jr., 33, of Bgy. 180, Zone 19, Amethyst St., Maricaban, who were all facing drug charges, were rushed to Pasay City General Hospital but were declared dead on arrival by attending physician.
Pasay police chief Senior Supt. Noel Flores said the incident happened at 8:40 p.m. after the victim’s fellow inmates found them unconscious.
The inmates called the attention of PO3 Angelita Aguila, the duty jailer, who sought the assistance of her colleagues in rushing the victims to the hospital.
Investigators are looking into a possibility that the victims suffered heat stroke due to increasing population of detainees. However, they will wait for the result of the autopsy examination to determine the cause of their death.
It was learned that some 84 inmates are currently detained in the cell for only 30.
To ease congestion, Senior Supt. Flores ordered the head of SDEU to transfer temporarily 54 inmates to 12 Police Community Precincts (PCP) while waiting for the court to issue commitment orders.
