AT least 53 individuals, including an 81-year-old man and two women were arrested for holding illegal cockfight or “tupada” Thursday afternoon in Valenzuela City.
Northern Police District (NPD) Director Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Ylagan said the arrest were made following several text complaints and telephone calls received by District Special Operation Unit (DSOU) chief Lt. Col. Giovanni Caliao from concerned citizens reporting about an illegal cockfighting was being held on Lamesa Street in Bgy. Ugong.
Combined elements of DSOU, Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) team and District Mobile Force Battalion (DMFB), in coordination with Valenzuela police chief Col. Fernando Ortega, conducted the raid at around 1:50 p.m. and caught the suspects while engaging in illegal cockfighting.
However, Maj. Amor Cerillo of DSOU, who led the raid said several other individuals escaped.
Operatives seized a total of P721,300 bet money, 15 live fighting cocks, two dead fighting cocks, assorted cockfighting paraphernalia and one unit Cal. 40 Glock pistol with magazine and 24 pieces of bullets.
Charges for violation of P.D. 1602 or illegal gambling and R.A. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act were filed against the arrested suspects before the Valenzuela City Prosecutor’s Office.
