Baby dies, ma critical in jitney mishap

A 1-month-old baby boy died while his mother was seriously wounded when they were hit by a speeding passenger jitney while walking along the road gutter yesterday morning in Navotas City.

Kaehll Ejija Mariano succumbed to severe head and body injuries while being rushed by responding JRT ambulance to Navotas City Hospital while his 22-year-old mother identified as Angelica Ejija, of 098 Pescador St., Bgy. Bangkulasi was still under observation at the same hospital due to body injuries.

Navotas police chief P/Col. Rolando Balasabas said the incident happened at around 6:40 in the morning along Road-10, Pescador, Bgy. Bangkulasi.

Investigation showed that while Angelica, who was carrying her baby, was walking along the road gutter of Road 10 on their way home, a speeding passenger jitney which was heading towards C-4 Road hit them.

Due to the impact, Angelica and her child were thrown off a few meters and landed on the pavement while the driver of the passenger jitney with plate number TVR-259 identified as Reymond Villanueva, 45, of Inocencio St. Bgy. 93 Capuilong, Tondo, Manila, surrendered to the police.

Col. Balasabas said Villanueva is now facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and serious physical injury before the Navotas City Prosecutor’s Office.
