A member of “Basag-Kotse” gang involved in series of robbery and drug pushing was gunned down when he stabbed and wounded one of the policemen who cornered him after a long chase Wednesday afternoon in Pasay City.

Jelfren Abejo, 41, died on the spot from bullet wounds in the body while P/Cpl. Benigno Aquino was rushed to Adventist Medical Center for treatment of stab wound in the left shoulder.

Pasay police chief P/Col. Bernard Yang said the incident happened at around 3:20 p.m. at the corner of Taft and Gil Puyat Avenues.

Col. Yang said that while elements of CCP Complex Police Community Precinct (PCP) composed of P/Cpl. Mantaring and Cpl. Bauzon were conducting routine mobile patrol, they received a tip from their informant that Abejo, a notorious member of “Basag-Kotse” gang, was seen along San Luis St.

However, when the suspect sensed the presence of policemen, he immediately ran towards an alley in San Luis St. prompting lawmen to chase him up to Leveriza and A. Pablo Streets until he was able to ride a passenger jeep on Taft Avenue going to Makati City.

Cpl. Aquino, who joined his colleague in chasing the victim while on board his motorcycle was able to corner the suspect but instead of surrendering, Abejo stabbed the cop who stumbled to the ground, along with his motorcycle.

Upon seeing his fallen comrade, Cpl. Mantaring shot the suspect while Cpl. Aquino who was able to draw his firearm also fired a shot hitting Abejo in the body.
