BJMP seizes, destroys contraband

MORE than 400 cellular phones and hundreds of packs of cigarettes seized during the recent clearing operations in different metro jails were destroyed by officials of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-National Capital Region (BJMP-NCR) as it kicked off its week-long celebration yesterday.

Jail Chief Superintendent Ignacio S. Panti, Regional Director of BJMP-NCR together with Jail Senior Supt. Milet G. Batac, assistant regional director for administration and Jail Supt. Manuel O. Chan Jr, chief of operations, led the kick off ceremony in celebration of the National Correctional Consciousness Week (NACOCOW) at the BJMP-NCR activity area.

Panti led the destruction of the seized cellular phones using an iron mallet. Water drenching  des-troyed 320 packs of cigarette packs. He said the contraband was seized during the series of operations conducted in different jails in Metro Manila.

Panti said the week-long celebration from Oct. 21 to 27 aims to raise public consciousness of inmates or Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).
