College professor, compu encoder nabbed for qualified theft

A PROFESSOR was arrested in Mandaluyong City for 23 counts of qualified theft after he allegedly stole around P1.6 million  tax payments of his former employer.

Mandaluyong Police chief Senior Supt. Moises Villaceran Jr. said Joel M. Baptista, 52, of Unit 1858 Residence Meralco Avenue, in Bgy.San Antonio, Pasig City, was arrested at the parking area of the Jose Rizal University (JRU) on Magalona Street, in Bgy. Bagong Silang Mandaluyong City, based on a warrant issued by Taguig City Regional Trial Court Judge Elisa Sarmiento-Flores of Branch 266.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by the Sun Life Insurance who hired Baptista as tax manager from 2007 to 2014. The Sun Life said the accused used his position and stole P1.6 million of tax payment.

The crime was discovered when the company noticed some discrepancies during its annual audit conducted from 2014 to 2015.

The court recommended P1.1 million bail for his temporary liberty.

Meanwhile, Zhang Wei, 26, computer encoder of Vertex Digital Company located at the 5th floor of Tower 4 Double Dragon, Meredian Park, on EDSA Ext. and Macapagal Blvd. and a resident of 26-E Tower 3 Sea Residences Condominium, Sunrise Drive in Mall of Asia Complex, was arrested following a complaint of qualified theft by his employer in  online gaming in Pasay City.
