The Parañaque City regional trial court yesterday acquitted Bureau of Corrections chief Gerald Bantag and two other prison officers in connection with the 2016 deadly bomb blast in the city’s jail which left 10 inmates dead.
The court acquitted them over a multiple homicide case - 10 counts of homicide - for insufficiency of evidence, Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete confirmed.
Reports revealed that Bantag was meeting inmates when the blast occurred inside his office on August 11, 2016.
President Duterte appointed Bantag as BuCor chief, replacing Nicanor Faeldon who was fired over the controversial good conduct time allowance (GCTA) fiasco.
As head of BuCor, Bantag will be in charge of seven other prison facilities - the NBP, Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro, and the Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.
