MANILA Mayor Isko Moreno yesterday asked motorists and kind-hearted individuals not to give alms to street dwellers and instead let the local government do its part in giving assistance.
Moreno said that while the city government is caring for the homeless, he wanted to do it through proper channel.
Moreno’s appeal came after more than 700 people allegedly homeless were rounded up by a joint team of the Manila Police District (MPD) under Gen. Rolly Miranda and the Manila Department of Social Welfare headed by Re Fugoso. Most of the alleged “homeless” were found to be high on drugs or drunk.
Moreno said that during the start of Metro-wide lockdown last March 16, he immediately directed Fugoso to gather all the homeless people and bring them to evacuation facilities. However, many absconded and go back to the streets to beg.
