A CENTER island in the busy area of Moriones in Tondo, Manila which for the past years has been turned into a dirty dumping ground for trash including an unused container and a steamroller while doubling as a personal cock farm, a toilet and a squatters’ site, was ordered cleared yesterday by Isko Moreno.

Accompanied by city engineer Armand Andres, department of public services chief Kenneth Amurao, special mayor’s reaction team (SMART) chief Maj. Jhun Ibay, the Manila Police District (MPD) under its director Gen. Vicente Danao, Jr. and their respective teams, Moreno himself led the clearing operations and the dismantling of the iron railings that have been used to enclose the island.

Moreno caused a stir when he turned to the kibitzers who were there and told them: ‘Kung ano ang makukuha at mapapakinabangan ninyo, kunin n’yo na!,’ prompting some of those who were initially watching, to quickly move and collect whatever they can salvage and resell, specially iron grills.

According to Andres, the said center island stretched from  Road 10 all the way to  Sta. Maria and is about two kilometers long.

Moreno pointed out that center islands serve the purpose of being a divider for two lanes heading toward opposite directions and while it is not prohibited, what was done in Moriones smacks of abuse of authority on the part of barangay officials under whose jurisdiction the area falls.

‘It was turned into a virtual eyesore where feces and urine also abound along with squatters. May container, may pison, may kulungan ng mga manok at tambakan ng mga basura, tae, ihi’ he lamented.

Moreno went on to lambast the chairman whose barangay hall is right in front of the center island and for not showing up even while the clearing operations were already going on.
