Early Christmas break starts Dec 15

November 28, 2018

TO give students more time with their family, the  Department of Education (DepEd) declared on Wednesday an early Christmas break in public schools nationwide.

In its order, the Education department has moved the start of schools’ Christmas break from December 22 to Dec. 15.

“The Department of Education values children spending quality time with the family. The Christmas season provides an opportunity for students to strengthen their emotional bonds with their family,” the order stated.

The Education department, however, said that Dec. 15, a Saturday, will remain as a class day intended for student activities.

Meanwhile, classes will resume on January 2.

DepEd Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla said the decision to move the schools’ Christmas break at an earlier date would also avoid students from the holiday rush.

Some lawmakers earlier asked the Education department to consider moving the start of schools’ Christmas break at an earlier date to help decongest thoroughfares expected to be extra busy at the time.

She, however, clarified that students are not the ones who caused traffic during holiday season.

“We [at DepEd] just want to lighten and explain the parents that the students are not the cause of traffic. They [students] are victims of traffic,” Sevilla said.
