Elderly, PWDs in Manila to get jobs in food chains

September 04, 2019

SENIOR citizens and persons with disability (PWDs) in Manila will not only be accommodated for job opportunities in leading food chains but will also be exempt from paying police clearances when they apply for such.

This was announced yesterday by Mayor Isko Moreno, as he thanked the said food chains for helping his administration realize its goal and Manila Police District (MPD) Director Vicente Danao, Jr. for offering to give free police clearances to the senior citizens and the PWDs who may need such document when applying for jobs.

Moreno also called on the PWDs and the elderly who will be able to land employment to make the city proud and do their best to become productive members of the company that took them.

‘Today is the start of new opportunity for our PWDs and senior citizens. Now, you are going to be more productive. We will not succeed without the help of the private sector. Ngayon kahit pano, ‘yung inyong pangarap na makatulong sa buwanang gastusin ng pamilya pwede na,’ Moreno said, after signing a memorandum of agreement with a food chain company that had agreed to hire PWDs and senior citizens as part of their staff, with secretary to the mayor Bernie Ang and Manila department of social welfare chief Re Fugoso as witnesses, among others.

He also said that those who used to feel neglected will now belong to the working society ‘ kaya ‘wag nyo pong ipahiya ang siyudad ng Maynila.’

Meanwhile, Moreno called on other companies and private corporations to emulate those who have already agreed to help the city government in the said program to make the PWDs and senior citizens become productive members of the community, saying such help is ‘immeasurable’.

Fugoso said at least five private companies catering to the food business have already offered such help. The terms are different for each one, she said.

In the same speech he delivered in City Hall, Moreno also announced that senior citizens will now be given cakes during their birthdays, just like what is being done in Makati City.

‘Sinabi ko naman sa inyo, dadalhin ko ang Makati dito, pyait-pyait lang. Ang importante may nauumpisahan, may mangyayari. Pag ‘yan naganap na,  you will never know but we have to start somewhere,’ Moreno said.
