Eleazar, Bantag lead Bilibid Prisons raid

Seize contraband, rip structures.

AROUND 1,800 government personnel led by agents from the National Capital Region Police Office and the Bureau of Corrections yesterday demolished illegal structures inside the National Bilibid Prisons and seized drugs and other contrabands following a massive search of the compound, NCRPO director, Major General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar, said.

“We demolished all unauthorized structures inside the NBP, some of them built within the vicinity of the prison which are believed to be a beehive of corruption and unequal rehabilitation treatment to Persons Deprived of Liberty,” said the NCRPO chief as he presented the seized contrabands along with BuCor Director General Gerald Q. Bantag.

Eleazar said the illegal structures and contrabands were found mostly inside the NBP’s Maximum Security Compound which they raided early in the morning.

Confiscated during the simultaneous raids were a huge volume of illegal drugs, improvised weapons, sex toys, banned appliances and other machines and bundles of cash.

“Hindi mo na mabilang dahil napakarami,” Bantag said in explaining the quantity of drugs seized inside the NBP’s maximum security compound.

Armed officers from the NCRPO, BuCor, Armed Forces of the Philippines Joint Task Force NCR, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Bureau of Fire Protection, PNP Special Action Force and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency participated in the raid.

Over 65 personnel from the Department of Public Works and Highways also helped in the demolition work. The DPWH men brought various heavy equipment including a backhoe, a unit breaker, dump trucks, a boom truck, backhoe loaders, bulldozers and hand tools and other equipment to demolish the unauthorized facilities.

“Nagtitipon tayo para sa mahalagang kaganapan dito sa BuCor. Ito ay makasaysayang araw and it is a great opportunity to be part of this noble undertaking,” Eleazar told the participants.

Eleazar said the demolition is part of the new BuCor administration’s reforms as they have committed to institutionalize cleansing inside the country’s main insular penitentiary.

“We have created monsters hanggang sa tayo na ang natatakot sa mga taong ito habang tayo ang dapat nangangasiwa sa kanila,” he said as he expressed frustration over the current state of the national penitentiary.

The official has guaranteed Bantay of the NCRPO’s full support to the BuCor’s program to end all forms of lawlessness and institutionalize reforms inside the NBP.

Bantag said that the need for the constant conduct of random raids just to clean out jail cells from all forms of contrabands is their way to fulfill the massive and aggressive reformation programs being implemented at the BuCor.

“Kapag i-allow mo ang ganyang klaseng illegal structures na yan, diyan na sila nagtatago habang gumagamit ng mga cellphones at iba pang mga ipinagbabawal na kagamitan para hindi mo na makita,” the BuCor director explained.
