Eleazar vows to throw book at cop who killed young boy

Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar

NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office director Major General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar yesterday vowed to throw the book at the Caloocan City policeman who shot and killed a 6-year-old boy in a shooting incident last Sunday.

Eleazar said that all indications showed Corporal Rocky de los Reyes will be getting the boot and a jail term. This after investigators failed to find witnesses that would corroborate the suspect’s claim he accidentally shot Gean Habal, 6, of No. 944 A. Mabini Street in Barangay 178, Camarin, Caloocan City, after trading shots with a wanted criminal.

The gun surrendered by Delos Reyes has been found by ballistics experts from the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory as the source of the bullet that killed the victim. The victim’s grandmother Elza Montanez, 65, was shot in the foot by an unidentified armed man when she tried to stop the fleeing suspect.

Eleazar who visited the wake of Gean on Wednesday learned that the victim dreamt of becoming a policeman in the future.

Delos Reyes was already detained at the station jail after he underwent inquest proceedings at the Caloocan City Prosecutor’s Office. Delos Reyes was visited and confronted by an angry Eleazar but he maintained he exchanged fire with a wanted criminal. However, Eleazar said he won’t buy his alibi for lack of witnesses.
