AFTER the Manila City Hall Underpass, Mayor Isko Moreno announced that it is now the turn of the Lagusnilad Underpass, also near the Manila City Hall, to undergo a much-needed makeover to make it clean, pleasing to the eyes and safer for motorists specially at night.
Moreno said he has already directed the city’s engineering department headed by Engineer Armand Andres to undertake the rehabilitation of the said underpass which is currently dirty, smelly and dark.
The Lagusnilad Underpass is a vehicular underpass which leads southbound motorists coming from either Jones Bridge in Binondo or Quezon Bridge in Quiapo, to Taft Avenue.
As of this writing, Moreno said the worn-out tiles on both sides of the said underpass have been removed and will be replaced in such a way that dirt caused by passing vehicles will not stick to the walls that make them unsightly.
The mayor also bared plans to have the said underpass repainted and lighted up for the benefit of motorists passing through at night.
Engineer Andres said that based on the mayor’s plan, the walls will be painted with a mural and the signage will be painted gold, complete with bright lights to guide motorists.
Andres added that flooding in the said underpass had been resolved with the transfer of the pump and electrical room to the top, from its usual location under the underpass. In its old location, the pump’s performance was hampered each time it gets wet.
Currently, Andres said the underpass is being checked for possible leaks after which an asphalt overlay will be put.
“Siguro mga one month aabutin ito. Ang gusto ni mayor, ‘yung ilalim ng Lagusnilad ay iilawan nang husto para kahit gabi, magmukhang araw,” Andres added.
The Lagusnilad Underpass serves vehicles bound for Taft or P. Burgos Avenue while the Manila City Hall Underpass which connects the City Hall to Taft and Intramuros and which was reopened to the public after undergoing full rehabilitation, is an underground walkway for pedestrians.
During normal times, thousands of motorists and pedestrians use the said underpasses daily.
Moreno said the Lawton Underpass which connects the Park ‘N Ride area to the Intramuros area will also undergo renovation to better serve the public.Publication Source : People's Tonight
