Jeepney crushes sexagenarian

POLICE arrested a jeepney driver who escaped after his vehicle hit a sexagenarian man who died of massive head and body injuries while undergoing medical treatment Friday afternoon in Navotas City.

Virgilio Palmares, 61, was arrested by the Navotas police with the assistance of barangay officials past 4 p.m. in his house at 062 Piscador St. Brgy. Bangkulasi after his public utility jeep was tracked down with the help of witnesses who were able to get its plate number.

Navotas police deputy chief for administration Supt. Ferdinand Balgoa said the incident happened in front of Global gas station in M. Naval St. Brgy. North Bay Boulevard North (NBBN) while the victim, identified as Magin Icaonapo Villafuerte, 63, of 379 NBBN was walking on the outer lane of the road at around 6:25 a.m.

The public utility jeep was coming out of the gas station and while turning right going south of M. Naval Street fatally hit the victim who was rushed by his relatives to Tondo Medical Center.

Police said the driver immediately sped away instead of helping the victim who later succumbed to head and body injuries at around 3:05 p.m.

Chief Insp. Ilustre Mendoza, deputy chief for operation, said the vehicle was impounded by the City Traffic Management Office while charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide was filed against Palmares before the Navotas City Prosecutor’s Office.
