FORMER Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim thanked current Mayor Isko Moreno for the kind words heaped upon him during the 25th founding anniversary of the Universidad de Manila (UDM) over the weekend and for maintaining the provision of free college education for the city’s poor but deserving students.

Lim echoed Moreno’s call for the students in the city-run colleges not to waste the opportunity being given to them to avail of free tertiary education a privilege which is not readily available in other cities.

‘Ang importante, mag-aral sila nang mabuti. Kahit anong ganda at dami ng unibersidad na ipinatayo mo, kung hindi naman mag-aaral nang mabuti ang mga estudyante, bale-wala din,’ Lim said, adding he was humbled by Moreno’s  pronouncements citing the significance of his decision to establish the UDM (then City College of Manila) for the benefit of those who wish to pursue college but cannot afford it.

Lim praised Moreno for working hard to turn around the deplorable state under which the city of Manila was left when he took over the mayorship following the May elections.

Lim established CCM 25 years ago to accommodate average students, since the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), which was established in 1965 as the only existing city-run college, only took in high school students who graduate with honors.

During UDM’s silver anniversary on Friday, Moreno acknowledged Lim as the reason why the UDM stands proud to this day, to the point that he (Moreno) made the students pledge to study well and thank Lim for having built the UDM.

Moreno called on those behind the operations of UDM and its students to work towards innovating and making the institution better by adapting to challenges, guided by the goal of  making it at par, if not better, than the PLM.

‘I want UDM to be the next PLM,’ Moreno said, as he announced plans to give UDM financial autonomy just like the PLM.

‘It’s time to stop politicizing the UDM via financial autonomy.  Sa madaling salita, hindi nyo na kailangang mamalimos sa aming mga pulitiko,’ Moreno said.

Moreno said he plans to hand over the UDM’s budget in lump sum ‘and then you spend it the way you want and see fit...by that time, I  hope makakarinig na ‘ko muli na may topnothcer sa UDM.’
