ALERT agents of the Bureau of Customs at the terminal 2 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport confiscated some 1,500 live turtles in a smuggling attempt last Saturday by a Filipino traveler from Hong Kong.

BoC-NAIA District Collector Mimel Talusan said the four pieces of luggage  were abandoned by its owner at the  carousel.

“Maybe the passenger was informed about the illegal shipment and when examined, the luggages  contained  some 1,500 pieces of live turtles and they were all dock taped,” Talusan said.

The live turtles were brought into by a Filipino traveler from Hong Kong on board Philippine Airlines flight PR 311.

It was learned that the 1,500 turtles included  species like Star tortoise, Redfoot tortoise, Sulcata tortoise, and Red-eared Slider.

Talusan said illegal wildlife trading is a violation of Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (Republic Act 10863) and Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147).
