A FEMALE agent of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group on Friday afternoon became the first policewoman and the 96th member of the force to be arrested and jailed by the PNP Counter-Intelligence Task Force, a report to PNP chief Director General Oscar D. Albayalde said yesterday.
Senior Police Officer 1 Mary Ann Malcontento of the PNP-CIDG Anti-Transnational Crime Unit was arrested by PNP-CITF operatives under Senior Superintendent Romeo M. Caramat Jr. in an entrapment operation inside the 7-Eleven Convenience Store a few meters away from the PNP national headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City at 5:40 p.m. Friday, the Journal Group learned.
Her offense: demanding a Louis Vuitton bag, a wristwatch and P50,000 from a woman who was previously arrested by the PNP-ATCU for involvement in large-scale illegal recruitment operations in Metro Manila.
According to Caramat, they conducted the sting in coordination with PNP-CIDG director Chief Supt. Amador V. Corpus after receiving a complaint that the policewoman had demanded the LV bag worth P34,000, a P3,000 wristwatch and P50,000 cash from Ms. Sona Gaba, a resident of 1838 M. Eusebio Avenue, Employees Village in Pasig City.
Caramat said that in her complaint, Gaba said that the policewoman had been repeatedly calling her on her phone and making her demands while at the same time telling her she would not be harassed or subjected to another entrapment operation by the CIDG.
The PNP-CITF director said they learned that Gaba was previously arrested and charged for illegal recruitment and estafa by the CIDG-ATCU but the cases filed against her were dismissed by the court.
During the entrapment operation, SPO1 Malcontento was caught in the act of receiving the P50,000 in boodle money topped by two marked P1,000 bills. She was immediately handcuffed by PNP-CITF officers and taken to the CITF headquarters for investigation and filing of charges for robbery-extortion.
CIDG-ATCU chief Supt. Roque Merdegia Jr. said that Malcontento used to be assigned with the CIDG Women and Children Complaints Unit until she transferred to their unit last year.
“She even joined us in conducting an entrapment operation against a fake doctor in Pasig City hours before she was arrested. On our way back to our office, she asked that she be dropped off at the Petron Gasoline Station since she would talk with somebody,” Merdegia said.
Minutes after they arrived at the CIDG-ATCU office to prepare the charges against one ‘Dr. Geselle Castro,’ Merdegia said they received word that SPO1 Malcontento had been arrested by the PNP-CITF.
The official said that they arrested Castro for medical malpractice inside her clinic at F. Antonio Street in Bambang, Pasig City following a number of complaints forwarded to their office.
