VOLUNTEER firefighters were extolled by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno for their selfless dedication to duty without getting anything in return.

Speaking at the TXTFire Grand Eyeball held at the Chiang Kai Shek College Auditorium in Tondo, Manila, Moreno commended the members comprising the TXTFire Philippines for their volunteerism.  Said group, headed by its founder and president Gerie Chua, is composed of 3,000 volunteer firefighters and 500,000 members nationwide.

During the event which was also graced by Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna and Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) chief Arnel Angeles, the mayor thanked the group for readily aiding the city government in whatever way they can.

Moreno particularly cited the help provided by the firefighters whenever the city needs to conduct flushing and other activities that require their expertise and equipment.

The mayor also lauded those present for risking their lives and limbs just to help others they do not even know.

‘Minsan, di nyo na iniisip ang mga mahal ninyo sa buhay dala ng public service.  Mahirap talaga ang public service,’ he said.

‘Merry Christmas at Happy New Year at sana ay kaawaan kayo ng Diyos na maging ligtas kayo.  Lalo na Bagong Taon, may mga maglalaro na naman ng apoy… next year, sana ay huwag kayong magsasawa na tulungan ang lungsod ng Maynila lalo na sa oras ng pangangailangan namin,’ Moreno added.

After his speech, Chua’s son Gerik handed over to Moreno a plaque of recognition and a personalized fireman’s hat, as Gerik announced his designation as their group’s honorary fire chief. Moreno gamely wore the hat and had his pictures taken wearing it.

Gerie Chua, for his part, said his group is in full support of Moreno and his programs, citing the many positive reforms he had introduced just a few months after assuming office.

‘Our group will be here to help in whatever way possible, knowing and trusting that we have a mayor who means well and is bent on bringing Manila back on its feet,’ Chua said.
