Don’t expect class suspension all the time.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has called on students to not expect him to suspend classes all the time, saying such announcements must be justified and reasonable.

Moreno made the pronouncement due to recent mounting requests for him to include pre-school and senior high schools when he announced a class suspension over the weekend owing to the nationwide transport strike last September 30. The said suspension covered only colleges and graduate schools, both private and public.

In an interview, Moreno said that since July 1 alone, he has already suspended classes eight times due to bad weather and only after receiving information that justifies such move.

In the case of the nationwide transport strike, Moreno noted that pre-school and high schools were not included because students from these institutions, under normal circumstances, live near their schools.  Public school students, specially, must be residents near the schools they apply for as part of requirements.

I should know dahil produkto din ako ng public school. Hindi nila kailangan ng public transport dahil within the vicinity lang sila nakatira,’ Moreno said.

The mayor stressed that while the city government is concerned about the welfare of the students, a balance has to be struck since education is also a priority.

According to Moreno, he fears that frequent cancellation of classes may adversely affect the studies of the children, adding that he also consults education authorities in his decisions.

He also advised the students that instead of always asking for suspension, students should be thankful and consider themselves lucky that they are in school, saying not everyone is given the opportunity to attend school.
