MMDA to assist LGUs in clearing roads

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will resume its road clearing operations on Monday in coordination with the 17 local government units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said members of Task Force Special Operations (TFSO) will assist the LGUs in their operations against obstructions in an effort to help alleviate traffic and bring order on the streets of Metro Manila.

“Metro local chief executives have asked for our assistance in reclaiming public roads and clearing areas in their jurisdiction from all kinds of obstruction. We appeal for the cooperation of everyone as we aim for accessible roads free from illegal obstructions,” said Lim.

TFSO members shall also conduct intensified clearing operations on Mabuhay Lanes or identified roads that serve as alternative routes for motorists who want to avoid Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue.

Agency personnel who will conduct clearing operations are required to wear face masks and face shields, practice physical distancing and other safety protocols to prevent possible transmission of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Let us ensure unimpeded vehicular movement particularly along the major thoroughfares. We urge the motorists to obey even the most basic and simplest traffic rules and regulations which can create a big impact in improving the traffic situation in Metro Manila,” said Lim.

The LGUs’ resumption of road clearing operations is based on the Department of Interior and Local Government Memorandum Circular 2020-145 which gives LGUs 60 days, from November 16 to January 15, 2021 to comply with the presidential directive to clear roads of illegal structures and obstructions.

The MMDA suspended for almost eight months its road clearing operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
