MANILA International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Ed Monreal yesterday lauded a lady employee of a travel agency who found and returned a pouch containing money and which belonged to a Korean tourist.
Citing a report forwarded to his office, Monreal said operatives of the MIAA’s Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) and Lost & Found Unit turned over yesterday a total amount of P120,614.87 to the said Korean, identified as Hwang Sung Ha, who arrived in NAIA Terminal 1 last Oct. 31, 2018.
Monreal thanked Judith Mertola of Lucky Jet Travel & Tour for not taking interest on what she.
“Malaking tulong din sana ’yun sa kanya but I admire her for choosing to do good. Huwag nating bigyan ng lugar sa NAIA ang mga walang pakialam sa imahe ng ating paliparan at ng ating bansa,” said Monreal, as he appealed to all airport workers to follow the gesture of Mertola.
It was learned that Hwang flew in around 10 p.m. and unknowingly dropped his pouch at the UBE Express counter located at the arrival area. Mertola found the pouch at 12:30 a.m. of Nov. 1, 2018. It contained several cards, including a credit card, US$2,056 in cash and 31,000 Korean won as well as 6,020 Thail baht.
Mertola was said to have immediately informed her co-worker Pinky Rose Canicosa, who accompanied her to the lost and found section, escorted by a security guard.
The IID and the airlines that flew her in reportedly tried to contact Hwang through his given phone number but there was no response.
Further efforts were exerted to make sure the money is returned to the rightful owner until information was obtained that Hwang was scheduled to depart yesterday (Nov. 26, 2018) via flight OZ 702.
After checking in for his flight, the airline’s ground handling agents approached Hwang and invited him to the IID office to claim his pouch. He was speechless after seeing his pouch and finding all its contents intact when all along, he thought he had lost it already.
