Navyman killed by own gun

February 15, 2019

A MEMBER of the Philippine Navy (PN) was killed by his own gun yesterday morning inside his room in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

PO3 Marlon San Pedro of the Manila Police District-homicide section identified the victim as Cpl. Michael Arceo, 26, assigned at the 28th Marine Company, Marine Battalion Landing Team 8, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City and residing at 1774 Malabon St., Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Investigation showed that the incident took place at around 3:20 a.m. inside the victim’s room.

The victim’s live-in partner  Sushmita Tayo told the police that before the incident, she saw the victim cleaning his gun.  Moments later, she left him and went to their SMC videoke bar downstairs to take care of their customers.

After a few minutes, they heard a gunshot from the second floor where she left the victim so they rushed upstairs, only to find the victim sprawled on the floor with blood coming out from the back of his head.

The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital but died while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound in the chin that exited at the back of his head.

The incident is being investigated to determine if the victim accidentally or intentionally shot himself, after Tayo told the police that she and the victim had been having fights lately.

Police said the victim then threatened to shoot himself several times in the past but that Tayo always stopped him.

An investigation is also underway to see if there was foulplay.
