MANDALUYONG Police found pieces of styrofoam inside a “suspicious box” abandoned at the EDSA Shaw underpass Friday morning.
The items were placed inside the box that was left at the center island of EDSA Shaw Tunnel.
“The box only contained waste materials, styrofoam,” said Police Col. Remigio Sedanto, Mandaluyong City Police chief.
Traffic along Shaw Boulevard underpass became heavy yesterday when authorities closed it after the box was found by street sweepers at around 9 a.m.
Members of Mandaluyong City Police Explosive and Ordnance Division ( EOD) responded and investigated the scene.
Authorities eventually closed off a portion of the tunnel when they detonated a bomb destructor to determine if the box contained possible explosives.
A member of the bomb squad also approached the box to inspect its contents.
“Most probably it was left behind by undisciplined people,” said Sedanto, who took the helm of Mandaluyong City Police only on Thursday.
The police chief said they are still conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the culprits who left the box.
