Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency agents seize party drugs in posh Bonifacio Global City hotel

AGENTS of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency yesterday seized nearly P7 million worth of suspected Ecstasy and cocaine inside a room of the posh Shangri-la at the Fort in Bonifacio Global City which was found to have been rented too by a moneyed drug trafficker arrested by the police for illegal drug possession last May 22, PDEA chair Director General Aaron N. Aquino said.

Armed with a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 issued by Judge Rosanna Fe Romero-Maglaya of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 88, members of the PDEA National Capital Region in coordination with the Taguig City Police Station served the search warrant at Room 909 of Shangri-la at the Fort which was rented previously by Domingo Tanyao Uy Jr.

Aquino said that when opened, the room’s safety deposit box no. 74 was found to be containing some 2,750 pieces of the designer drug called Ecstasy with a market value of P4,675,000, 14 pieces of transparent plastic cartridges containing suspected dangerous drugs, 200 grams of cocaine valued at P1.06 million.

As a result, Uy, who has been charged by the Southern Police District headed by Brigadier General Eliseo DC Cruz last month will be facing additional criminal charges for possession of dangerous drugs under RA 9165.

Last May 22, members of the National Capital Region Police Office arrested Uy after some P8.5 million worth of party drugs were discovered inside his rented unit at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.

Also recovered inside the room were P700,000 in cash and checks worth P175 million. According to NCRPO director, Major General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar, the contraband were discovered by two housekeepers inside an open vault while they were cleaning the area.

Uy is a Filipino-Canadian citizen who has been staying in the place since last December until he was arrested.  Eleazar said that among the party drugs seized last May were 4,038 Ecstacy pills, 350 grams of high-grade cocaine, 103 grams of kush and three bottles of liquid marijuana.

Both the PDEA and the NCRPO have called on security managers and staff of hotels and other high-end condominiums in Metro Manila to be on the lookout for illegal drug activities taking place in their establishments.

In January 2018, police said that an unpaid rent led to the discovery of an illegal drug operation inside the posh Forbeswood Heights in Forebestown Road, BGC in Taguig City. A certain Benjamin de Vera was found renting the unit. Officials said that the Taguig City police acted on a complaint from the management regarding the man’s failure to pay his rent.

Officers accompanied by condominium and barangay officials eventually discovered weighing scales and dozens of packets of marijuana, cocaine, Viagra and Valium as well as 20 pieces of syringe containing suspected illegal drugs.
