Suspect in elderly couple’s slay killed in gun scuffle

A CONFESSED 37-year- old suspect in the killing of two octogenarians and the wounding of the couple’s housemaid in Quezon City was killed in a reported gun-grabbing incident which took place inside a Quezon City Police District mobile car on Wednesday evening.

Carl Joseph Bañanola had just undergone inquest proceeding at the Q.C. Hall for two counts of robbery with homicide and frustrated murder when he reportedly tried to snatch the gun of one of his escorts identified as Staff Sergeant Alex Icban.

During the scuffle for the gun possession, QCPD Station 4 commander, Lieutenant Colonel Rossel Cejas was forced to fire at the suspect who died while being taken to the East Avenue Medical Center.

The Philippine National Police leadership said it would investigate the incident even as it maintained that it is giving the QCPD officers the presumption of regularity in the performance of duty.

The confessed killer was declared dead upon arrival at the EAMC around 6:52 p.m. Wednesday.

Bañanola confessed to the killing of Nicolas Austria, an 86-year old retired engineer and his wife Leonora, 87, a retired government employee and the wounding of the couple’s ‘kasambahay’ Editha Fernandez, 63.
