FORMER presidential political adviser Atty. Francis Tolentino yesterday expressed concern over the new water rate increase of Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co. Inc.
In a statement, Tolentino said the new water rate increase was an additional burden to consumers who were already suffering from high spiralling prices of basic commodities and other goods.
Tolentino, a former chairperson of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, issued the statement after the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) approved the rate hikes of both water concessionaires.
Recently, the MWSS-Regulatory Office said the MWSS Board of Trustees has approved a downward adjustment for foreign currency differential adjustment (FCDA) and an upward inflation adjustment, which still resulted in an upward total adjustment.
MWSS approved Maynilad Water Services Inc.’s increase for the first quarter equivalent to P1.48 per cubic meter while that of Manila Water Co. Inc. is an increase of 64 centavos per cubic meter of its basic charge.
“This would mean an additional P3 to P5 from the pockets of our poor countrymen,” Tolentino pointed out.
He lamented that the continued privatization of these local water firms may only exacerbate the situation.
