A 46-year-old woman died while a fireman was injured when a fire of still undetermined origin razed at least 20 residential houses and left 35 families homeless before dawn yesterday in Caloocan City.

Caloocan Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) arson investigator FO1 Zoren Cabagay said the charred body of Alice Simbulan was discovered at around 5:44 a.m. in the rubble of a burnt house at the corner of 4th Avenue and Nadurata St., Brgy. 49 while the injured fireman identified as FO1 Arsis Borja was rushed to Caloocan City Medical Center for treatment of a lacerated wound.

In his report to Caloocan Fire Marshal Supt. Stephen Requina, FO1 Cabagay said the fire started at around 3:30 a.m. at the two storey residential house owned by Emmanuel San Juan and being occupied by Asuncion Rubio.

The fire quickly spread to nearby houses which were made up of light materials prompting the BFP to raise the fire to 3rd alarm before it was declared fire out at around 5:42 a.m.

FO1 Cabagay said that during the blaze, the victim had already gotten out of her burning house but decided to return to get something.

Arson probers are still conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the cause of fire that razed P1.2 million worth of properties.
