A CONSTRUCTION worker was arrested for catcalling a woman Friday in Quezon City.
Jay-ar Cabesas, 20, of No. 74 Heleford St. Bgy. Bahay Toro, was charged with violation of City Ordinance 2501 also known as the Anti-Catcalling Ordinance.
Police said the incident happened Friday afternoon while the victim, a 22-year-old communication’s manager of B-229, L-28 Mindanao Ave. Extn., in Bgy. Sta. Monica, Novaliches, was playing with her pet dogs outside her house.
The suspect was standing nearby and apparently motivated with lewdness, whistled at her several times and uttered “Hello ate, bhe ano pangalan ng aso mo? Sana aso na lang ako. Ano cellphone number mo? Akin na lang cellphone number mo”.
Quezon City Police District Director Joselito T. Esquivel Jr said the victim sought the help of mobile patrol policemen of Novaliches Police Station (PS 4) who arrested the suspect who denied the accusation.
The catcalling or whistling at women is strictly prohibited in Quezon City. The ordinance approved by the Quezon City Council aims to protect and empower women by imposing a fine and prison term for acts constituting sexual harassment in public spaces.
Esquivel commended the victim for getting the suspect arrested by seeking police help. He further encouraged women who experience similar disrespect to report it immediately to authorities for prompt action.
“Huwag po kayong mag-atubiling i-sumbong sa ating kapulisan ang mga insidenteng tulad nito upang maparusahan ang mga gumagawa ng anumang pambabastos. Maaari ring i-report ang anumang sexual harassment sa QC hotline number 436-7211,” he said.
