A 6.3 MAGNITUDE earthquake on Wednesday night struck Mindanao killing at least five persons, injuring dozens of others and triggering a power blackout in the affected areas as power lines collapsed, disaster and police authorities said yesterday.
Among those killed was a 7-year-old child from Datu Paglas, Maguindanao and Tony Panangulon, a man in his early 40s, who suffered a heart attack.
Two others were buried in a landslide in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur during the quake.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said the epicenter of the tremor was recorded in Tulunan, Cotabato.
At least 17 were reported injured in Makilala, North Cotabato and are now undergoing treatment at the Makilala Medical Specialist Center.
Some of the wounded were hit by falling debris from collapsing walls.
The earthquake also damaged dozens of residential houses and private establishments in Davao del Sur and Soccksargen regions.
Many hospital patients in affected areas were evacuated.
Reports said that a pregnant woman in Kidapawan City suffered a miscarriage as over 200 aftershocks jolted the southern city right after the quake.
Fire erupted at the Gaisano Mall in General Santos City after the quake.
