ONLY presidential son and Congressman-elect Paolo Duterte can stop Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez from trying to win back the Speakership.
In a television interview, Alvarez said should Paolo or Pulong decide to aspire for Speakership he will withdraw his bid.
Paolo has made it clear however he is not interested in the Speakership.
In a statement Rep. Duterte said “I did not say I want to be Speaker.”
Somebody whispered the wrong information to the President, he added.
To date, the PDP-Laban has two contenders – Alvarez and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco. There are 83 members of PDP-Laban who won the mid-year elections.
“Pag tumakbo si Congressman Paolo na Speaker, susuportahan ko,” Alvarez said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel.
“Kung mapapatunayan na magaling siyang Speaker at may liderato siya, why don’t we give him a chance?” he added.
Paolo is representing the First District of Davao City.
In an earlier statement, his sister Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said it is up to President Rodrigo Duterte if he will allow the outgoing Vice Mayor to become Speaker of the House.
Meanwhile in a separate interview, outgoing Minority Leader Danilo Suarez believes that Paolo is not interested in the position.
“I don’t think Congressman Paolo is running for Speaker. Alam nila na hindi magandang tignan na tatay mo president tapos anak mo Speaker of the House. I really doubt people will accept that, marami na ang tataas ang kilay,” Suarez said in an interview.
Mayor Sara, the founder and chairman of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, was reportedly behind the ouster of Alvarez who was replaced by former President now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
