FORMER Speaker Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez has resigned as Secretary General of the ruling Partido Demokratikong Pilipinon Laban ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

Alvarez said he resigned from the party because he intends to pursue a voter’s education campaign for Filipinos given the importance of the 2022 elections.

“Unfortunately, serving as a ranking officer and member of PDP-Laban while simultaneously handling this advocacy may be misconstrued by critics as politicking by the Party presently in power;” Alvarez said.

Alvarez instead will be joining Reporma party of Renato de Villa.

In a statement, Alvarez thanked PDP-Laban’s President, Senator Aquilino “Koko”Pimentel III, for allowing him to serve as the Secretary-General of PDP-Laban for almost half a decade.

The former Speaker of the House is cutting ties with President Rodrigo Duterte, especially since he and Davao Mayor Sara Duterte have their differences.

In bidding goodbye to the ruling party, he expressed his deep apprecition for the Party’s efforts in bringing to the attention of the nation the importance of empowering local governments as a prerequisite for a strong republic.

Inspired by the example of Tatay Nene Pimentel, this is an issue that Rep. Alavarez, along with PDP-Laban, has championed throughout his life especially since he is also a probinsyano who experienced the neglect felt by Filipinos living in provinces far away from Manila.

He thanked PDP-Laban for its support during the 2016 and 2019 elections.

“The Party’s assistance for those campaigns that led to historic electoral victories cannot be understated,” he added.

Nonetheless, Rep. Alvarez respectfully sought the understanding of Senator Pimentel as he is constrained to tender his irrevocable resignation from his position and membership in PDP-Laban effective immediately.

Given these events, Alvarez has accepted de Villa’s offer for him to be Reporma’s Chairman.
