STARTING today, all jail facilities under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) are on a red alert in anticipation of the influx of visitors who will spend Christmas with their detained loved ones.
BJMP Spokesperson Chief Insp. Xavier Solda said all jail personnel are not allowed to go on leave and should be on their respective posts from December 24 to December 26.
The next red alert status for the holiday season will be on December 31, January 1 and 2, 2020.
“Habang pula ang kalendaryo ay hindi kami pinapayagang mag-leave and at mag-absent. Ito naman ay kasama sa aming sinumpaang obligasyon sa bureau at sa ating mga PDLs (persons deprived of liberty),” Solda said.
All wardens especially in jails with high congestion rates are directed to implement continuous and organized visitation system considering the number of visitors to come which in some instances reach up to 50 percent of the present jail population.
The Cebu City Jail has the biggest number of PDLs with 6,041 followed by the Manila City Jail with 5,306 and Quezon City Jail with 3,542.
Solda said activities during the Christmas seasons are only limited to purely visitation due to lack of space for parties.
“Hindi na talaga sila halos makakilos sa sobrang sikip kaya wala na silang lugar para sa mga party-party,” he said in reaction to question on special treatments among the inmates.
