Bribery yarn denied

ONE of the aspirants for speakership vehemently denied the claim one of them is resorting to bribery to clinch the top post in the House of Representatives.

In a television interview, Pampanga Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales said giving the members of the House P1 million each is “insulting.”

“Bakit mo naman bibigyan ng P1 million, pare-pareho lang naman tayong nasa Kongreso,” Gonzales said over ABS-CBN News Channel.

It was Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, also a candidate for Speaker of the 18th Congress, who claimed that a certain candidate is giving P1 million to each House member to get his vote.

Other candidates are Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, who according to Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez has already 150 votes; Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco and Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.

According to Gonzalez,  the bribery story is not true because  lawmakers got elected as Speaker without giving money to their colleagues.

“Naging speaker si Sonny Belmonte, walang gastos. Naging speaker si (former) Speaker (Pantaleon) Alvarez, walang gastos. Naging Speaker si GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) walang gastos, ni singko walang gastos. In (the) 14th Congress, nag-start ako, walang gastos yan, kaya nagtataka ‘ko sa’n nanggagaling ‘yan, kung meron man yan siguro, yung mga iba, pero I’m not sure about that,” he said.
