Cash gift for 75-year-old seniors pushed

WHY wait for 100 years old when they should enjoy the money at 75?

This was the context of the House Bill 4895 filed by ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap which he is pushing in time for the celebration of the National Respect for Centenarian’s Day.

Yap is proposing  amendments to the Section 2 of Republic Act 10868 or the Centenarian Law.

Under the proposal, Senior Citizens should receive cash gift as early as reaching the age of 75 until they reach 100.

“May mga matatanda na nasa 60 years old pa lang ay hirap na kung saan kukuha ng pambili ng gamot at iba pang pangangailangan nila. Paano ‘yung walang pension na nakukuha mula sa pamahalaan? Ang pagbibigay ng cash gift sa mga senior citizens simula edad 75 ay moral obligation natin sa kanila, hindi man malaking halaga pero sigurado tayong makakatulong ito,” Yap stressed.

Under House Bill 4895, all Filipinos residing here and abroad will receive P20,000 upon reaching the age of 75 and another P20,000 will be given after every five years until they reach 100 years old.

By that time, they will receive a cash gift of P100,000 as mandated by law, Yap added.

“It will essentially double what the centenarians will receive but let us not look at it that way. Biruin n’yo, pagtungtong ng 75 years old, P20,000  lang ang matatanggap and after five years pa ulit ang susunod, that is only roughly P11  per day na binibigay natin sa kanila for five years. Nakakadurog ng puso at panahon na para baguhin ang batas na ito, bigyan naman natin sila ng dignidad,” the neophyte lawmaker added.

Yap also vowed to push for more legislative measures for the welfare of senior citizens as they have done for other sectors like teachers, nurses, seafarers, OFWs, and farmers.

ACT-CIS Partylist already filed HB 4406 which seeks to protect senior citizens from abuse and violence and will also file a measure to provide employment opportunities for seniors.
