SPEAKER Alan Peter Cayetano still respects the speakership term-sharing agreement, however he is open to staying on as Speaker he is open to it.
In an ambush interview shortly after the flag raising ceremony in the House of Representatives, Cayetano said he will wait for Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco to forego the deal.
Cayetano and Velasco agreed to term-sharing under 15-21 scheme with Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez as the Majority Leader.
The agreement got President Rodrigo Duterte’s blessing.
“Open to the possibility. Eh kung si Congressman Velasco mismo ang magsabi sa akin, ‘Ikaw na lang ang Speaker,’ alangan namang pilitin ko pa siya, ‘di ba?” Cayetano said who celebrated his 49the birthday yesterday.
But Cayetano was quick to say he knows that Velasco has his own supporters in the House as well.
“I mean, tao din tayo. We’re also public servants and we also believe in our own leadership. How can other people believe in my leadership if I don’t believe in my leadership?” Cayetano stressed.
“Having said that, may leadership din ‘yong tao. May following din ‘yong tao. Head din siya ng partido ng ating Pangulo so I also have to respect that,” he added.
In an earlier interview, Cayetano assured members of the House that term sharing will push through.
