Francis Tolentino

A NEW power bloc is taking shape in the Senate, according to Senator-elect Francis Tolentino who said that a new group is being formed y senators from Hugpong ng Pagbabago, PDP-Laban and Nacionalista parties.

The development uld lead to the Senate presidency of Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III being challenged when the 18th Congress opens.

Tolentino claimed that at least nine senators will join their new bloc.

Some of them may be Senators-elect Bong Go, Bato Dela Rosa, Bong Revilla, Pia Cayetano and Imee Marcos.

Returning Senators Koko Pimentel, Manny Pacquiao and Cynthia Villar are also expected to join the new bloc.

In the current rules, at least 13 senators are needed in order to claim the leadership of the Upper Chamber.

Sotto said in a statement said that he accepts the forming of blocs which would be good for the Senate and the performance of its mandates.

“That’s good for them. Coalitions are always good if it’s for the good of the country,” Sotto said.

He however insisted that he did not know of anyone who was interested in challenging him for his position.

“Not to my knowledge. And I’m not worried if ever, because I only serve at the pleasure of the majority,” Sotto claimed.

Meanwhile, Pimentel denied the statement of Tolentino insisting that there had been no talk concerning the forming of a new bloc and the Senate leadership.
