FOREIGN Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. breezed through the Commission on Appointments (CA) after his ad interim appointment was approved after only 30 minutes.

It has been the tradition of the CA to let former lawmakers to “walk in the park” in their appointments to government positions.

But some senators, for formality’s sake, threw some questions to Locsin.

One pressing matter Locsin was asked about was the issue on the relations of the Philippines with China and the West Philippine Sea.

Locsin said that as secretary of foreign affairs, he will push for the strict coordination between the coast guards of both countries.

“There was a proposal for an even tighter coordination between China and Philippines, I rejected that but now it seems necessary for a tighter coordination,” Locsin said.

He also assured the members of the CA that he will not surrender the rights of the Philippines in the contested territories and will fight for the implementation of the International Tribunal ruling.

In his sponsorship of Committee on Foreign Affairs chairperson Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, he tagged Locsin as the “future president” with his intelligence and wit.  He also described the secretary as a “never dull and never ordinary” person.

Aside from Locsin, the CA also approved the appointment of 47 DFA officials.
