Davao crime curbed by extrajudicial killings

Rodrigo Duterte

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte Friday night said that extrajudicial killings, which refer  to executions without due process, are a reality in Davao City.

He made the remark to emphasize the growing economy in Davao City, where he served as local chief executive for more than 2 decades, because of its supposed low crime rate.

”In the matter of elements of progress, Davao is in the forefront and only because we decided, gisabot ko ninyo kay niadto pa ba nang extrajudicial killing,” Duterte said in Cebuano during a speech at the miting de avance of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago - Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod (HNP-HTL) Davao City District 1.

(In the matter of elements of progress, Davao is in the forefront and only because we decided, naunawaan ninyo ako dahil noon pa ‘yang extrajudicial killing.)

The President then went on to explain that religious leaders tied with the Manila’s high society, who are critical of his campaign against illegal drugs, didn’t understand his policies.

“Ang wa makaantos nganha, dili ang mga taga-Davao nga pari kay nakasabot sila, kun dili katong mga obispo nga naa sa mga elitista sa Manila,” he said.

(Hindi ito matiis, hindi ng mga pari sa Davao dahil naintindahan nila ito, kung hindi ng mga obispo ng mga elitista sa Maynila.)

“Wala man gyud na sila nagkagusto nako. Unang-una, probinsiya ko. Ikaduha, ilang issue nga droga-droga, patay-patay, DDS-DDS,” Duterte added.

(Hindi naman talaga nila ako gusto. Unang-una, galing akong probinsiya. Pangalawa, ‘yung issue tungkol sa droga, patayan, at DDS [Davao Death Squad].)
