Department of Agriculture to help draft agri master plan for Bangsamoro

Emmanuel Piñol

The Department of Agriculture  has committed to help the newly-established Bangsamoro Autonomous government in preparing a 10-year Agriculture Master Plan to set the direction for agro-fisheries development of the region with rich resources but very high poverty incidence.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol made the commitment during his meeting with Bangsamori Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Agriculture Minister Mohammad Yacob last Thursday.

Piñol said the DA and the BARMM Agriculture Ministry will convene a multi-sectoral workshop shortly after the elections to prepare the Agri-Fisheries Master Plan.

The BARMM, which comprises of five provinces of Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Maguindanao, Basilan and Tawi-tawi and the City of Cotabato, has one of the highest poverty incidence among the regions of the country.

“This is in spite of the fact that the region possesses vast resources like Lake Lanao, Liguasan Marsh and the vast fishing grounds teeming with fish,” Piñol said.

Piñol added that the DA is eyeing the BARMM as a prospective food and fisheries production area for the country because of its rich volcanic soil and the distinction of being typhoon free.

“We have to leave that behind us and do it right this time,” Minister Yacob assured the DA.

Piñol said the 10-year agriculture and fisheries master plan will target increased food production and reduced poverty in the region.
