A Filipina seafarer who was apparently depressed over the repeated delays in her repatriation committed suicide oboard her ship docked in Barbados.
Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr on his official twitter account said “Mariah Jocson took her life onboard Harmony of the Seas where crew detained awaiting Philippine repeatedly rescinded repatriation.”
“It is my sad duty to report that a 28-year old female mariner committed suicide in her cabin in the ship where she’s had to stay because repatriation flights back to the Philippines have been suspended again,” Locsin said.
He added “I know our quarantine facilities are jam-packed; just don’t know why.”
Locsin said this was the second suicide incident reported among overseas Filipinos since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).
“We are tartly reminded that Filipino resilience is no excuse to stretch them to breaking point. Di sila goma; tao sila,” Locsin Tweeted.
Last May, a Filipino household service worker jumped to her death while at the Philippine Embassy in Beirut shelter. Her case is still being investigated.
