PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte yesterday paid tribute to mothers in the Philippines and elsewhere in the world during the celebration of Mothers’ Day.
In a video message posted on the Facebook page of top aide and senatorial candidate Bong Go, Duterte greeted and wished mothers a “very happy and contented life.”
“I know how it is to be a mother because may nanay ako at nakita ko ang hirap at ginhawang ginawa niya para sa pamilya niya. Pero mabuhay kayong lahat mga nanay,” he said.
Duterte was referring to his mother Soledad who died on February 4, 2012 at the age of 95.
Soledad was one of the leaders in Davao City of the Yellow Friday Movement, which supported the candidacy of the late President Corazon Aquino in the 1986 snap elections, during which she ran against late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
In February this year, Duterte visited the tomb of his mother in commemoration of her 7th death anniversary.
In May 2016, as it became apparent that he would be elected President, Duterte also visited the tomb of his parents and asked for help to lead the nation.
