AFTER spending the weekend in Davao City, President Rodrigo Duterte returned to Manila yesterday amid government preparations for a possible hazardous eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, who accompanied the President during the trip, said they were the first to land at the Manila airport which suspended arrivals and departures due to safety concerns following Taal’s ash explosion on Sunday.

Photos released to the media by Go showed Duterte looking out the window of the plane.

Duterte was set to attend an event with the Philippine Marine Corps in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City on Monday afternoon.

“The Marines event this afternoon will push through. The appropriate agencies are doing what they need to do in times of calamity per direction of the President,” Duterte’s spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.

Panelo said on Sunday that Duterte had “given instructions to undertake measures necessary to place the people within the perimeter of Taal out of the danger zone.”
