WILL President Rodrigo Duterte resign from the presidency as he had said he would if his son Paolo sought the House speakership?
The President may still change his mind, the President’s spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Paolo Duterte’s statement was only about a plan.
“Plano pa lang hindi pa malaman kung tutuloy o hindi. Siguro he will wait for that to happen kung tutuong mangyari,” Panelo said.
But he quickly added that a person can always change his mind.
“You know, sabi nga, you make a position, you make a stand based on circumstances. When circumstances change, you change your stand. So pwedeng magbago ang isip ni Presidente. Pwedeng magbago ang isip ni Cong. Paolo Duterte, tignan natin. Let it evolve,” he said.
“Itong si Paolo, sabihin ko sa kanya, if you run for speakership, let me know. Kasi kung tatakbo ka, magre-resign ako,” Duterte said in a speech during the oathtaking of newly appointed government officials in Malacañang.
Panelo said the President was serious in his statement but there was always a possibility that he would reconsider.
“Ang isang tao pag nagsalita ng bagay seryoso ‘yun unless there are circumstances that will compel him to alter his stand,” Panelo said.
“Hindi natin alam kung ano ang mga kalakaran na magpabago sa isip ni Presidente. Sa ngayon ‘yun ang sinabi niya, hindi pa natin alam kung ano ang kahihinatnan,” he added.
Pressed for clarification, Panelo said he would ask the President himself.
“Tanungin natin si Presidente para maliwanag, para wala nang speculation. I’ll ask the person himself para sigurado,” he said.
He added that Paolo had a right to run for Speaker.
“We cannot prevent people from running. It is between the father and the son, ibang usapan na ‘yun. Pero as a general principle, if you are qualified, you can run,” Panelo said.
