Erring MC riders nabbed

August 01, 2020

MEMBERS of the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group yesterday started apprehending and issuing traffic citation tickets to pillion riders without the motorcycle barriers required as a protection against COVID-19, Lieutenant General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar said.

Eleazar, the commander of the Joint Task Force COVID Shield, said that agents of the PNP-HPG headed by Brigadier Gen. Eliseo DC Cruz are under instruction to flag down motorcycle-riding couples with no barriers between them.

Cruz said that the barrier must follow government-approved designs and not  be fashioned out of mere carton.

Since they lack the number of personnel to man all roads, Cruz said that they will be conducting random checkpoints only.

On Friday, the PNP released its guidelines on the enforcement of the rules on motorcycle pillion riding as the deadline for installing motorbike barriers ended with police ordered to accost violators who would be fined a minimum of P1,000 and a maximum of P10,000 for the offense.
